Hidden Valley Gold and Silver Mine: Carbon Inventory Management in a Carbon-In-Leach Circuit

Morobe Consolidated Goldfields Limited, a subsidiary of Harmony Gold, has been operating the Hidden Valley Gold and Silver mine in Papua New Guinea. In 2021/2022, the company installed six Mintek online carbon concentration meters (C2 Meters) in their Carbon-In-Leach (CIL) circuit to evaluate the benefits of real-time carbon measurement for automated carbon management.

Improved Carbon Management: Real-time carbon measurements led to an 89% reduction in fresh carbon consumption rate.
Reduced Gold Losses: Gold solution losses to the CIL final tails were reduced by 45%.
Automated System: C2 Meters eliminated manual entry and automated carbon movement sequencing.
Reliable Measurements, Accurate Inventory: C2 Meters provided reliable measurements, ensuring accurate estimation of carbon inventory for optimized metal recoveries.

Results

The real-time measurements of carbon concentrations in the leaching tanks that are provided by the C2 Meters helped achieve significant benefits both in terms of overall carbon management in the circuit and in consistently reducing soluble gold losses to the CIL final tails. The site experienced an 89% reduction in both the fresh carbon consumption rate and reduced the gold solution losses into the CIL final tails solution stream by 45%.
